Nalu — Menstrual Cycle Based Wellness Service
Student Team Project
Year
2025
Duration
10 weeks
Overview
Nalu is a women-centered fitness concept that adapts workout guidance to menstrual-cycle patterns and how users feel day to day, helping exercise feel more responsive instead of rigid.
Role & Scope
Product Designer: I established our initial design concept, led prototyping feedback sessions, and worked with our visual design lead to balance between data-driven functionality and visual craft.
📍 Context
When fitness overlooks women’s rhythms
Most fitness services are designed around male biology, and women continue to train without understanding how to take advantage of their unique biological rhythm.
We want to translate womens’ monthly rhythms into a tailored, adaptive fitness experience, one that listens to their energy, encourages their balance, and celebrates their natural flow of motivation so they feel and perform their best.
🛠️ Prototyping
Prototyping Questions
Desirability:
Does Nalu communicate its cycle-aligned fitness support strongly and clearly?
Do women feel supported and confident when interacting with the service Nalu?
Usability :
Can users smoothly navigate the key service flows without confusion?
Are there any gaps in the holistic Nalu experience across touchpoints and stages?
Desktop System Mapping
We presented our concept and used the workshop to test the desirability of connecting the menstrual cycle with fitness, as well as to validate the ecosystem we designed.
Desktop Walkthrough + Wireframe Prototyping
Through the onboarding flow, we aimed to test how users respond to the educational content about the menstrual cycle and whether they trust Nalu with their health data.
Insights from prototyping:
01
Desktop System Mapping
Users need a clearer sense of value before signing up, since many don’t know about cycle syncing or why their health data is needed.
We need to be clear about what types of data we collect from users.
02
Desktop Walkthrough + Paper Prototyping
Keep onboarding short and focused on key information.
Current flow focuses too much on data collection, lacking engagement and emotional appeal.
✅ Delivery
Introducing Nalu
Hi-fi development
The high-fidelity design brings Nalu’s adaptive approach to life through clear interactions, supportive language, and a soft visual palette, making each step feel approachable.
Daily check-in
A quick check-in captures users' energy and motivation, adding context beyond cycle data alone.
Home Dashboard & Menstrual Cycle Chart
The home dashboard brings together today’s workout, daily logs, and cycle insights, helping users understand their current phase and what it means for their training.
Workout Plan & Guidance
Personalized plans reflect users’ cycle phase and daily check-in, while step-by-step guidance helps them follow each exercise with confidence.
Progress Tracking and Motivation
Post-workout reflections and progress summaries help users recognize their effort, notice changes in motivation, and see how each session adds up over time.
✨ Reflection
Keep prototyping testing as the design evolves
Nalu taught me that prototyping is valuable at every stage, from questioning early assumptions to refining interactions. In future projects, I would start testing sooner and keep returning to users as the design evolves, letting each round of feedback inform the next decision.
